Matters, an AI-native personal finance platform, emerged from stealth on 15 October 2026 with a US$5 million Pre-Seed funding round. The Stockholm-based company was founded by Per Österström, who previously built Sambla Group into the Nordics' largest consumer loan broker before selling it to Nordic Capital. Matters intends to rebuild banking around intelligence and automation to make financial wellbeing available to anyone rather than only to those who already enjoy it.
A Customer-Aligned Banking Model
Matters will offer neobank services for a flat monthly fee and provide an AI Advisor designed to help customers spend more consciously and increase their savings. Unlike traditional banks, the company will return secondary revenue streams such as interchange revenues and FX fees to customers through an accumulated cashback solution. By aligning incentives with customers, Matters can focus on creating a better customer experience and grow through strong retention and high loyalty.
Experienced Leadership Joins the Venture
Österström scaled Sambla Group to more than 400 staff and approximately US$200 million in revenue before its sale to Nordic Capital in early 2021. Lars-Åke Norling, the former CEO of Nordnet, has joined as Chair and brings experience in regulated consumer fintech and technical expertise to Matters as it expands into banking. During Norling's tenure, Nordnet's market capitalization increased tenfold to SEK 80 billion in less than seven years.
Angel Investors Support the Pre-Seed Round
The Pre-Seed round was anchored by Swedish angel investor Jakob Johansson. Other participants include Knut Frängsmyr, former Chief Operating Officer at Klarna; Voi Co-Founder Douglas Stark; Röko CEO Johan Bladh; Validio CEO Patrik Tran; and Evoke CEO Per Widerstrom. This investor group brings experience from fintech, mobility, and technology scale-ups, and offers both capital and operational guidance to the company's early development.
Leadership Perspectives on the Opportunity
Österström stated that banks earn more when consumers manage their money worse, while Matters is deliberately moving in the opposite direction. He added that the angel investment allows the company to enact its vision and that the first consumer product will launch in the coming weeks. Norling expressed confidence in the mission and in Österström as a second-time founder with deep knowledge of consumer finance.
Targeting Financial Stress at Scale
Matters highlights that banking transactions have doubled in the last decade, while half of Gen Z and millennials do not know where their money goes. The company also points to regular money stress among 80% of young adults as a pressing consumer problem. By applying AI technology, Matters plans to help consumers retain and grow their savings and achieve greater financial peace of mind.
Plans for Licensing, Expansion, and Product Launch
The new capital will be used to apply for banking licenses, expand across the European Union, and grow the company's existing 14-person team. Matters also plans to increase its user base and may pursue strategic acquisitions. The company expects to launch its first consumer product in the coming weeks, with additional products to follow in subsequent months.
Matters enters the market with an ambition to become an AI-native consumer bank that helps customers gain control over spending and increase savings. Its combination of experienced leadership, angel capital, and a revenue model designed to return value to users could differentiate it from traditional banks. The first product launch will provide an early test of that ambition with European consumers.
