Meta and This Is Digital hosted the inaugural AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon in Nairobi on Friday, October 16, 2026. The competition attracted more than 400 applications, and ten finalists pitched live before a panel of judges. Neural Labs Africa and Me-Nasoma emerged as joint winners, each receiving US$5,000 in equity-free funding, Meta advertising credits, and an invitation to pitch at Meta's Regional AI Summit in Istanbul, Turkey, on November 24.

Winning startups and their solutions

Neural Labs Africa won with NeuralSight, an AI-powered tele-radiology platform that connects health facilities with remote specialists and supports diagnostic reporting. The platform is built to function in areas with weak internet connectivity, expanding access to medical imaging expertise. Me-Nasoma converts documents and web pages into audio in local languages through mobile, web, and browser extension platforms, serving students, professionals, and readers who struggle with written content.

How the competition was structured

Applications closed on September 30, 2026, and the shortlist of ten startups was announced on October 8. Finalists pitched live at The Social House in the Lavington area of Nairobi on October 16, 2026. The event was organized under the Meta AI Academy Kenya program with This Is Digital, and there was no entry fee, although teams covered their own travel costs to the pitch.

Building with Meta's open-source AI

The competition invited Kenyan startups and independent developers whose products or prototypes use Meta's open-source AI models, tools, or platforms. It forms part of the Meta AI Academy Kenya initiative, which aims to expand access to AI skills, tools, and opportunities in the country. Winners gain cash and advertising support, mentorship, and exposure to Meta's broader AI ecosystem ahead of the regional summit.

A varied field of finalists

The other finalists included HakiChain, an AI legal tool built on African law, and Sawazisha AI, a WhatsApp assistant that helps small businesses meet Kenya Revenue Authority eTIMS invoicing requirements. O.C.A. audits Social Health Authority medical claims before submission, while TemboTrade offers a sales, inventory, and M-Pesa payments platform designed for small enterprises. Jackfruit Network's School Needs Recommender, Utter Africa, JuaFlow, and Solivia Data's AfyaEdge completed the shortlist, showing the range of local AI use cases.

Organizers see local ecosystem value

Sarah Muyonga, Meta's public policy manager for East and Horn of Africa, said the partnership with government and local ecosystem partners is helping expand access to AI skills, tools, and opportunities in Kenya. Chinny Francis, policy programs manager at Meta, said Meta works with partners who understand local ecosystems to support innovators building solutions for community needs. Greg Wanjama, co-founder and chief executive of This Is Digital, said the competition connects local talent with technology, expertise, and a wider stage.

Growing demand for African AI

The event reflects growing confidence in locally developed artificial intelligence across sub-Saharan Africa. A May 2026 study by Public First, commissioned by Meta, found that 81% of online adults in the region believe AI products developed there will matter for economic growth. Meta has already run similar AI Academy programs in Nigeria, and the Istanbul summit will give the two winners an opportunity to pitch before a regional audience.

The AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon demonstrates how targeted competitions can surface practical AI applications for health, education, legal services, tax compliance, and small business operations. The equity-free funding and Meta advertising credits give early-stage founders financial support without diluting ownership, while the Istanbul invitation adds international visibility. Neural Labs Africa and Me-Nasoma now have a stronger platform to scale their solutions and contribute to Kenya's growing AI ecosystem.
