JinShari, a generative AI platform focused on bonsai management and aftercare, has begun formal proof-of-concept activities and market research following its top prize at the Saitama City Bonsai Business Contest. The company received the award on December 22, 2025, and is now working under the city's Bonsai Business Creation Support Program. Founder Tomoki Katsumura announced that the initiative also includes a scholarly crowdfunding campaign on Academist, scheduled to close on October 29, 2026.

Award and Commercialization Support

The program provides hands-on support for commercialization and connects the startup with traditional institutions in the Omiya Bonsai Village. JinShari is conducting detailed interviews with bonsai artisans and experts to document not only technical procedures but also the aesthetics, philosophy, and individual character of trees. These insights are being structured into the foundational knowledge base for the company's service model.

A Service Model Inspired by Manufacturing

JinShari draws inspiration from after-sales service models in the manufacturing sector to address a gap in the bonsai industry. The platform seeks to provide individualized aftercare environments that help enthusiasts anywhere keep their trees healthy and well styled. It uses generative AI and multimodal technologies to make professional knowledge more accessible beyond the physical limits of traditional bonsai nurseries.

Industry Challenges and Opportunity

Global demand for Japanese bonsai has risen across Europe, the Americas, and Asia due to growing appreciation for its artistic and spiritual qualities. At the same time, domestic production faces a decline in successors and the number of bonsai nurseries. Because bonsai requires daily watering, fertilization, and pest control along with pruning and wiring, many overseas enthusiasts lack access to localized professional advice.

Platform Capabilities

The JinShari application is testing several core functions for practical accuracy and usability. Its AI growth management support combines specialized bonsai information with weather data to deliver tailored daily care guidance. A second feature preserves the trunk and root characteristics in user photos while generating visual concepts for future tree shapes, and a third enables direct remote consultations with bonsai nursery professionals.

Market Research and Global Strategy

Beyond technical development, JinShari is gathering feedback from domestic and international enthusiasts and retailers to analyze regional care challenges and support needs. The company is focusing on Japanese bonsai while also adapting its approach to local species and diverse overseas climate conditions. This parallel work is intended to inform a comprehensive global expansion strategy and expand data collection.

Academic Crowdfunding Initiative

To deepen the intellectual foundation of the business, JinShari has launched a crowdfunding project titled 'Delivering the Charm of Bonsai to the World.' The campaign on academist will support the collection and digitization of modern bonsai literature and the construction of an analytical research base. It aims to examine how bonsai aesthetics developed in dialogue with tea ceremony, Japanese gardens, and painting through digital humanities methods.

Leadership and Next Steps

Tomoki Katsumura is a doctoral candidate in agricultural and resource economics at the University of Tokyo. He was selected for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications ICT Startup League and the Tokyo Technology Commercialization Program. JinShari will continue its proof of concept and strategic market research with the goal of establishing a scalable bonsai aftercare platform.

JinShari's recognition by Saitama City and its ongoing partnerships with the Omiya Bonsai Village signal a meaningful step toward preserving and expanding Japanese bonsai culture. By combining generative AI with expert knowledge, the startup aims to give enthusiasts around the world the support needed to maintain healthy and beautifully shaped trees. The current crowdfunding campaign offers supporters a way to contribute to the research base behind this emerging service.
