Tokyo-based plastic recycling company esa, short for Environmental Solutions Architect, has secured a new round of funding from four investors, bringing its cumulative total to 1.15 billion yen. Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, Environmental Energy Investment, and SG Wonder zone participated in the round, with existing shareholders providing additional capital. The company will direct the funds toward expanding production and supply capabilities for composite recycled plastic pellets and accelerating market adoption across manufacturing sectors.

Building a Supply Source from Composite Plastics

esa is focused on hard-to-recycle composite plastics, which combine different materials and are difficult to sort and reprocess. These materials have historically been underused as feedstock for recycled products despite growing demand for circular materials. The company has developed a proprietary process called esa method that turns such composite plastics into reusable pellets, creating a new supply source for manufacturers.

How esa method Converts Difficult Plastics

The esa method is a material recycling technology designed for plastics with mixed resin compositions and other complex combinations. It uses a specialized kneading mechanism along with precise temperature and pressure control to stabilize processing even when different materials are mixed together. The resulting recycled pellet, branded Repla, can be used in injection molding, extrusion, and sheet forming applications across a wide range of products.

Strengthening Production and Supply Infrastructure

With the new funding, esa plans to strengthen its production and supply infrastructure to support the continuous needs of companies that use recycled materials. The company will build on its existing manufacturing and sales operations to improve both quality consistency and delivery capacity. This effort is intended to establish a framework that reliably delivers recycled pellets at the scale and specifications required by industrial users.

Expanding Demand in Manufacturing and Other Sectors

esa will work to broaden collaboration with manufacturers and other businesses to identify applications where composite recycled pellets can deliver value. The company intends to consider customer requirements carefully and cultivate recurring adoption in suitable uses. By growing demand in parallel with supply, esa aims to position difficult-to-recycle composite plastics as a stable feedstock for new products.

Investor Support and Strategic Network

The round includes participation from Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, Environmental Energy Investment, and SG Wonder zone. New investor participation was complemented by additional commitments from existing shareholders, which esa considers an important validation of its progress. The company plans to deepen ties with these investors and expand cooperation with financial institutions, operating companies, and regional partners across finance, investment, and manufacturing.

Future Pathways Beyond Pellet Supply

esa is also exploring future business development in product manufacturing with partners, plastic credits, and licensing of its technology and know-how. These areas are intended to extend the company's circular model to additional markets in Japan and internationally. The company views reliable recycled material supply and repeat usage as the foundation for making resource circulation economically sustainable.

esa promotes a "With Plastic" philosophy rather than a "No Plastic" approach, meaning necessary plastics should be kept in circulation instead of being discarded after one use. The company will focus first on stabilizing supply and expanding demand for composite recycled pellets, then pursue productization, plastic credits, and licensing. By balancing environmental value with economic viability, esa aims to establish resource recycling as a sustainable industry.
