Spain’s startup ecosystem has produced billion-dollar companies in enterprise software, cybersecurity, education, entertainment, artificial intelligence, and robotics. From Barcelona’s software companies to advanced-computing specialists in San Sebastián, these businesses have developed products and platforms for international markets. This article profiles 11 privately held unicorns as of October 8, 2026, including companies headquartered in Spain and others that expanded abroad while retaining substantial Spanish roots or operations.

Spain’s Unicorn Landscape

Nearly Half the Companies Have Overseas Headquarters

Five of the eleven companies in this mapping, approximately 45%, have headquarters outside Spain. Copado, Devo, Denodo, and Fever are headquartered in the United States, while Perk operates from London and Boston. Their Spanish connections nevertheless extend beyond founding history: Denodo retains a major engineering and product development base in A Coruña, while Perk maintains substantial operations in Barcelona. A headquarters-only count would therefore capture only part of Spain’s contribution to these businesses.

AI and Robotics Account for 75% of 2026 Newcomers Among Spain’s 11 Unicorns

AI and robotics account for three of the four companies in this mapping that reached reported unicorn status in 2026, representing 75% of the year’s newcomers. Multiverse Computing develops AI model-compression software, Xoople builds Earth-intelligence infrastructure for AI applications, and THEKER develops industrial robots. The fourth newcomer, Preply, operates in language learning. All three AI and robotics companies were founded in 2019 or later, adding a younger technology cohort alongside Spain’s established software, workforce management, and entertainment unicorns.

Factorial and Job&Talent Follow Different Valuation Paths

Factorial entered the unicorn club at US$1 billion in October 2022 and reached US$2.5 billion in June 2026. Job&Talent followed the opposite direction, moving from US$2.35 billion in December 2021 to €1.3 billion, approximately US$1.44 billion, in April 2025. Subsequent BlackRock TCP markdowns add uncertainty around Job&Talent’s current value without establishing a revised whole-company valuation. These contrasting histories show why unicorn status alone reveals little about a company’s valuation trajectory.

Methodology

A unicorn is defined here as a privately held startup with a substantiated valuation of at least US$1 billion, established through a funding round, secondary transaction, company disclosure, or credible financial reporting. Companies that have gone public or been acquired are excluded. Companies that have reached reported unicorn status are included even when their exact valuations have not been publicly disclosed.

Eligibility requires Spain to have been the company’s founding ecosystem or to serve as its principal operating base. Founder nationality or a regional presence alone is not sufficient. The latest publicly reported figures are historical valuation reference points, not estimates of current market worth, and pre-money or secondary-transaction-implied valuations are identified where relevant.

Historical unicorn status does not automatically qualify a company when credible later company-level valuation indications suggest a value below US$1 billion. Cabify and Domestika are excluded because later third-party indicators suggest values below US$1 billion, although these do not constitute confirmed new equity-round valuations. Their omission reflects a conservative approach to unresolved valuation evidence, rather than a definitive finding that either company completed a down round.

Spain’s privately held unicorn landscape brings together established software providers and emerging AI and robotics companies. Four businesses reached reported unicorn status in 2026, illustrating the growing role of newer technologies alongside earlier successes in business software, cybersecurity, and entertainment. The sector mix demonstrates that billion-dollar startup creation connected to Spain is not concentrated in a single industry.

Barcelona and Madrid remain important centers of activity, with San Sebastián contributing a notable advanced-computing presence. The international headquarters of several companies illustrate how Spanish ecosystem connections can persist as businesses expand globally, while their reported valuations represent historical milestones rather than current market prices.
