HyLight has raised €13 million to expand its fleet of hydrogen-powered inspection airships across Europe. The French startup develops and operates the HyLighter, a 12-meter autonomous airship that inspects power lines, pipelines, and railways. The round was led by Rubio Impact Ventures, DRW, and Teampact Ventures, with participation from existing investors Y Combinator and Ring Capital.

A Cleaner Alternative to Helicopter Inspections

The company positions its airship as a direct replacement for helicopters that currently monitor critical linear infrastructure. Helicopters can emit up to one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent per flight hour and remain expensive, noisy, and difficult to scale. HyLight's HyLighter flies without direct emissions, can remain airborne for up to 10 hours, and covers a planned range of 350 kilometers while carrying 10 kilograms of sensors.

Technology and Regulatory Progress

The 12-meter HyLighter uses helium for lift and a hydrogen fuel cell to power electric motors, allowing quiet and autonomous operation. It carries LiDAR, cameras, and methane detectors, producing imagery with a resolution of 1 millimeter per pixel at 25 meters and LiDAR point density above 1,000 points per square meter. With approval from French and European aviation authorities, it can fly beyond visual line of sight over critical infrastructure in rural, suburban, and urban areas.

Commercial Traction with Major Network Operators

HyLight has logged more than 750 flight hours and inspected thousands of kilometers in France and other European countries. Its HyLighter already performs missions for Enedis, NaTran, Téréga, SNCF Réseau, and VINCI, covering electricity networks, gas pipelines, and railway lines. The company's software uses artificial intelligence to detect more than 50 types of power grid defects and vegetation risks, delivering concise maintenance reports instead of thousands of raw images.

Proven in Sensitive and Dense Environments

HyLight has demonstrated its airship in some of Europe's most monitored spaces, including over the Palace of Versailles and on the Champs-Élysées. The HyLighter has also been presented at VivaTech and the Grand Palais, underscoring its ability to operate safely in populated areas. These demonstrations support the company's permission to fly beyond visual line of sight over critical infrastructure in urban, suburban, and rural settings.

Funding to Scale Fleet and Data Platform

The new 13 million euro investment will support fleet expansion, 50 new hires, and continued investment in artificial intelligence and automation. HyLight plans to grow from four operational aircraft to as many as 15 HyLighters by 2027 and has already opened a new production facility. Commercial expansion will prioritize Germany and the Netherlands as initial target markets while the company brings more strategic component manufacturing in-house.

Investor Confidence and Market Opportunity

Rubio Impact Ventures managing partner Helmer Schukken said HyLight offers a clean and scalable alternative that can deliver unrivaled cost savings for utilities. More than 80 million kilometers of linear infrastructure worldwide require ongoing investment, while climate change, tighter regulation, and aging grids are increasing inspection demand. The inspection drone market is valued at US$13.63 billion in 2026 and is forecast to reach US$25.82 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 17.3%.

The real test for HyLight will be whether utilities sign contracts large enough to sustain a fleet of 15 airships. With airships currently covering only 8% of the Enedis inspection plan, helicopters remain dominant in the near term. Still, the funding, regulatory approvals, and early commercial traction position the company to capture a growing share of the infrastructure inspection market.
