London-based movement intelligence firm HITAI has announced the acquisition of technology and intellectual property from the fitness gaming developer, Quell. This strategic move integrates Quell's camera-less motion recognition system with HITAI's established video-based analysis platform. The deal is set to enhance HITAI's capabilities in the sports technology sector by creating a more versatile and accurate data-capturing solution.

A Strategic Fusion of Technologies

The acquisition encompasses Quell's patent-pending motion-recognition models, the hardware and firmware stack for its Impact console, and the combat game Shardfall. Quell's innovative technology operates in real time on compact, low-power devices without the need for cameras. This addition will significantly bolster HITAI's core video-first infrastructure with a complementary sensor-based approach.

HITAI specializes in converting existing sports footage from training, events, and broadcasts into structured performance data. Its platform leverages computer vision and machine learning, eliminating the need for wearables or specialized camera systems. The company is currently commercializing its services in combat sports with plans for future expansion into other athletic disciplines.

Expanding Capabilities in Sports Analytics

By combining these two distinct technologies, HITAI aims to improve the accuracy and speed of its motion analysis, especially in environments with challenging camera placements. This enhancement will enable the delivery of more robust and engaging content for athletes, coaches, and fans alike. The synergy creates a powerful tool for comprehensive performance tracking and sports data services.

Ismail Baran, founder and CEO of HITAI, stated that the acquisition brings years of cutting-edge engineering into the company's portfolio. He emphasized that Quell's technology provides a foundation to build upon their video-first core and deliver exceptional products in new spaces. This strategic integration is expected to accelerate HITAI's product development and market reach.

The Legacy and Innovation of Quell

Founded in 2020, Quell established itself as a developer of immersive fitness gaming experiences. Its platform uniquely combined lightweight motion tracking with athlete-grade resistance bands to provide real-world feedback and resistance. The company claimed its system could help users burn over 600 calories per hour on average.

Quell's innovative approach attracted significant investor interest, culminating in a $10 million Series A funding round in 2023. The round was led by Tencent and included backing from other prominent investors such as Y Combinator, Khosla Ventures, and Heartcore Capital. This financial support underscored the market's confidence in its technology and vision.

Cameron Brookhouse, CEO of Quell, expressed his support for the acquisition, viewing it as an exceptional outcome for their technology. He noted that a core part of Quell's mission was to redefine the possibilities in sports motion recognition. Seeing this vision carried forward at scale by HITAI marks a successful continuation of their work.

This acquisition represents a significant milestone for HITAI, positioning it as a more formidable player in the competitive sports technology landscape. The fusion of camera-based and sensor-based motion tracking technologies promises to unlock new levels of data analysis and user engagement. Ultimately, this deal will likely accelerate the development of next-generation movement intelligence tools for the global sports industry.
