South African buy now, pay later platform Happy Pay has publicly launched Happy Ads, an AI-powered performance media platform that charges retailers only when a campaign results in a completed sale. Happy Pay, which raised a US$5 million Seed round in March, provides zero-cost installment payments through its ad-subsidized payments network. The new platform connects merchants with high-intent shoppers and aims to convert advertising spend into measurable revenue.

A Cost-Per-Acquisition Alternative

Unlike conventional digital advertising, where brands pay for impressions or clicks, Happy Ads operates on a cost-per-acquisition model. Retailers set the commission they are willing to pay and are charged only when a campaign converts into a completed sale. This shifts financial risk away from merchants and directly ties advertising costs to transaction outcomes.

Pilot Performance and Return on Ad Spend

During its pilot phase, Happy Ads generated more than ZAR 100 million in merchant sales and delivered over 268 million impressions. The pilot recorded an average return on advertising spend of 20 times, meaning that every ZAR 1 spent by merchants produced approximately ZAR 20 in sales. These figures indicate strong early demand for a model that links media spend directly to completed transactions.

Audience Reach and Network Growth

Happy Ads currently reaches more than 800,000 registered Happy Pay users and two million customers across its partner network. The company expects an additional six million users to join the network soon, which would significantly expand the available audience for participating brands. This growth provides retailers with access to a large pool of high-intent shoppers without the upfront risk of traditional media buying.

AI-Driven Discovery and Attribution

Happy Ads combines product discovery, targeted distribution, payments, and transaction-level attribution within a single platform. An AI recommendation engine ranks products for each shopper based on browsing behavior, purchase history, and interests. Every completed sale feeds back into the model, improving targeting accuracy and helping merchants convert more shoppers over time.

Partnerships and Platform Integration

Happy Ads integrates directly into audience owners' existing platforms, enabling banks, telcos, and fintechs to add shopping functionality to their apps. Steve Smith, Executive Head of Revenue Growth at Zapper, said the Happy Ads API powers Zapper Shop, and integration was seamless. He added that the partnership generated revenue for Zapper from the first day.

Building an Ad-Subsidized Payments Network

The launch is part of Happy Pay's broader strategy to build an ad-subsidized payments network rather than relying on interest charges paid by consumers. Merchant funding supports the platform and keeps installments interest free for shoppers. Happy Pay co-founder and CEO Wesley Billett said the model creates a customer acquisition flywheel for retail while supporting a more sustainable, consumer-friendly payments business.

Measurable Growth for Retailers

South African retailers are under pressure to make every marketing rand work harder, and Happy Ads provides a direct link between campaign spend and completed sales. Reporting tracks impressions, engagement, conversions, sales, and return on advertising spend across owned and partner channels. This gives merchants access to high-intent shoppers without the upfront risk associated with conventional media buying.

Happy Ads is now available to retailers and brands across South Africa, with distribution across Happy Pay-owned and partner channels. By aligning merchant costs with actual sales, Happy Pay is positioning itself as a growth partner rather than a conventional payment provider or advertising platform. The public launch signals a broader shift toward performance-based retail media in the country's fintech sector.
