Gritt, a robotics and AI company, has officially launched from stealth to accelerate global infrastructure projects. The company announced it has secured $32.4 million in total funding, including a recent $26 million Series A round led by Obvious Ventures. Gritt is developing an intelligent system that automates labor-intensive tasks on construction sites, starting with large-scale solar farm development.


Tackling a Critical Industry Bottleneck

The construction industry faces a severe labor shortage, with over 41% of its U.S. workforce projected to retire by 2031. This challenge is compounded by a 46% decline in productivity, a stark contrast to automation-driven gains in other sectors. Gritt aims to reverse this trend by introducing advanced automation to one of the economy's most vital areas.

Outdoor construction sites present unique obstacles to automation due to their chaotic and unpredictable nature, including variable weather and difficult terrain. According to CEO Puneet Puri, Gritt's physical AI is specifically engineered to operate effectively within these unstructured, real-world environments. The technology is designed to be robust and adaptable, handling conditions as they are without needing a controlled setting.

An Adaptable and Intelligent System

Instead of creating entirely new robotic vehicles, Gritt’s innovative system attaches to existing job site equipment like skid steers and forklifts. This platform combines proprietary AI with robotic arms to perform tasks such as material transport and assembly with millimeter-level precision. This approach allows construction crews to leverage familiar hardware while integrating next-generation automation into their workflow.

The system's AI model learns and improves with each deployment, significantly reducing the time required to train for new tasks. A process that once took months to master can now be learned in just days, showcasing the platform's high adaptability. This rapid learning capability is crucial for addressing the diverse and evolving needs of modern construction projects.

Gritt's technology is already demonstrating significant impact on solar farm construction, where it has placed tens of thousands of panels with zero breakages. An eight-person crew using Gritt's system can install between 3,000 and 4,000 panels daily, a substantial increase from the 800 panels managed by a conventional crew. This dramatic boost in efficiency highlights the system's potential to accelerate the renewable energy transition.

Strong Investor Backing and Market Validation

The $26 million Series A funding round was led by Obvious Ventures, with participation from Union Square Ventures and Active Impact Investments. Andrew Beebe, Managing Director at Obvious Ventures, praised Gritt for tackling the hardest and least predictable work first. This investor confidence is rooted in the company's pragmatic approach and its potential to create a compounding advantage as its AI grows smarter.

The company has already gained significant traction, securing contracts to install 2.8 gigawatts of solar panels over the next 18 months. Its client list includes three of the top ten U.S. power construction companies, validating the market demand for its solution. Gritt plans to expand its operational fleet to 48 systems within the next six months to meet this growing demand.

Looking ahead, Gritt envisions its platform evolving beyond task execution to become a comprehensive intelligence layer for site management. The system's sensors can capture real-time data on material flows and site conditions, helping supervisors anticipate problems and make better decisions. This capability could transform how complex infrastructure projects are planned and managed from the ground up.

The company plans to expand its system's capabilities to include other repetitive tasks, such as fastening solar panels, drilling posts, and tying rebar. By automating the most dangerous and physically demanding jobs, Gritt aims to improve worker safety and create a more sustainable labor market. This allows human workers to transition to higher-value roles that require complex problem-solving and oversight.
