Giraffe Bio, a company developing programmable biomolecules to recover critical minerals with a lower environmental footprint, has raised a US$6.4 million Seed round to validate and scale its mineral-specific reagent platform, building on prior backing from SOSV. The financing was led by Orion Industrial Ventures, with participation from BHP Ventures, Twynam, Air Capital, Baruch Future Ventures, and other investors. Giraffe Bio was also selected as the first Latin American company to join Breakthrough Energy's Fellows Program.
Targeting Copper Flotation Challenges
Copper is essential for power grids, renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and data infrastructure, yet rising demand is pushing miners to process lower-grade and more complex ores. Flotation supports roughly 80% of global copper production and directly influences how much metal a mine can recover. Much of the chemistry used in this process has remained largely unchanged for decades.
Applying Molecular Design to Mining
Giraffe Bio is adapting a drug-discovery playbook to mineral processing by combining AI-enabled molecular design, cell-free biology, and testing on real ore samples. The company engineers biochemical promoters for copper flotation that are tailored to specific minerals and ore conditions. These finished, drop-in reagents work alongside existing flotation chemicals and do not require new equipment or infrastructure.
Progress With Global Mining Partners
Over the past year, Giraffe Bio has progressed from laboratory development to validating its technology with global mining companies across multiple copper ore types. The company's approach avoids using living organisms in mining operations, relying instead on precision molecular products that integrate directly into existing circuits. Giraffe Bio is now advancing toward larger-scale pilots and industrial validation with mining partners globally.
Investor Confidence and Strategic Support
Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Alejandro Buffo Sempe said mining companies need to process more complex ores while the chemistry used to separate minerals has changed little in decades. He described Giraffe Bio's work as an effort to give operators a new lever for recovering more value without requiring new infrastructure. Jason Holt, Managing Partner at Orion Industrial Ventures, noted that advances in genetic sequencing and high-performance computing make biological solutions far more precise and faster than a decade ago.
Use of Proceeds and Next Steps
The new capital will support manufacturing scale-up, larger-scale pilot programs, expanded research and development capabilities, and continued growth of the company's technical and commercial teams. Giraffe Bio, founded in 2024, operates in Argentina and Chile while working with mining partners globally. The company's initial focus is copper flotation, a process central to global copper supply.
Recognition From Breakthrough Energy
Breakthrough Energy Fellows receive funding, tailored technical guidance, and access to a global network of mentors, experts, and partners. The program helps founders bridge the gap from lab to market and advance their solutions toward commercial readiness. For Giraffe Bio, this recognition complements the strategic support provided by its new investor syndicate.
Giraffe Bio's Seed round highlights growing investor interest in biology-based solutions for the mining sector, particularly as demand for critical minerals rises. The company aims to bring modern molecular design to an industry where flotation chemistry has seen limited innovation for decades. With new funding, strategic backing, and international recognition, Giraffe Bio is positioned to move its reagent platform toward commercial readiness and wider industrial use.
