Genesys Capital, a Canadian life sciences venture capital firm with more than $400 million invested over 25 years, has announced the second close of its Genesys University Seed Fund. Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and University Health Network are joining the fund as hospital partners. The second close builds on a first close that included the University of Toronto, McMaster University, Venture Ontario, the Temerty Group, and RBC.

Expanding Ontario's Life Science Ecosystem

The participation of Sunnybrook and UHN strengthens the fund's connection to Toronto's leading research and healthcare community. Both institutions work within the Toronto Academic Health Science Network, also known as TAHSN, alongside the University of Toronto. This network plays a central role in advancing scientific discoveries and translating them into practical health solutions.

Addressing an Early-Stage Capital Gap

The Genesys University Seed Fund invests in Pre-Seed and Seed rounds for life science companies emerging from Canadian universities, hospitals, and research institutes. Its mandate is to provide critical risk capital that supports the commercialization of Canadian innovation at the earliest stages. Kelly Holman, co-founder and managing director of Genesys Capital, said the first close demonstrated genuine appetite for building the next generation of Canadian life sciences companies.

University Health Network's Research Strength

University Health Network is Canada's leading research hospital and the world's second-ranked hospital, with more than 1,250 principal investigators and $688 million in annual research funding. UHN Commercialization has helped launch 20 financed life sciences companies, including BlueRock Therapeutics, Trillium Therapeutics, and AVROBIO. Since 2018, UHN-incubated ventures have generated more than $5 billion in economic impact through six equity exits and raised over $1.76 billion in financing.

Sunnybrook's Clinical and Research Expertise

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is home to more than 400 scientists and clinician-scientists who conduct over $170 million in research each year. This community generates discoveries and innovations that improve healthcare through translation, partnerships, and commercialization. Dr. Andy Smith, President and CEO of Sunnybrook, noted that too many promising innovations struggle to advance because they lack early-stage capital.

University of Toronto's Startup Track Record

The University of Toronto has emerged as a major source of life sciences entrepreneurship, with more than 1,800 venture-backed startups created over the past five years. These companies have raised over $27 billion and created more than 27,000 jobs. The university ranks among the top five in the world for university business incubators and first in Canada for research-based startups.

Leadership Perspectives on Commercialization

Kevin Smith, President and CEO of UHN, said Canada's challenge has never been scientific excellence but translating that excellence into patient impact and economic growth at scale. He noted that Canadian researchers have produced discoveries that transformed healthcare globally, yet the resulting companies, investment, and economic benefits have often grown elsewhere. Initiatives like the Genesys University Seed Fund, he added, help create stronger pathways from discovery to commercialization and ensure more Canadian-born innovations reach patients.

The expansion of the Genesys University Seed Fund highlights a broader effort to help Canadian-born innovations reach patients and grow into globally competitive companies. By connecting scientific discovery, clinical expertise, and entrepreneurial talent, the partnership aims to create high-quality jobs, investment, and long-term economic value in Canada.
