Firstwork, a New York-based frontline workforce AI company, has raised $15 million in Series A funding led by Earlybird Venture Capital. Legion VC and Deel Ventures joined the round, alongside existing backers Gradient and Y Combinator. Announced on October 21, 2026, the investment brings the company's total funding to $20 million and will support expansion across the United States and Europe.

Addressing Operational Challenges in Frontline Employment

The new capital will help Firstwork develop AI agents that handle administrative tasks between a worker's application and first shift, as well as responsibilities that continue after employment begins. The company is targeting employers with large workforces in sectors such as healthcare, logistics, delivery, and other labor-intensive industries. Its approach focuses on executing operational processes rather than introducing another standalone system for managing employee records.

Frontline recruitment can involve multiple stages beyond selecting a candidate, including identity verification, right-to-work checks, training arrangements, and payroll registration. Disconnected software systems can create delays while candidates wait for authorization to begin working. Firstwork aims to close that gap by connecting existing HR, payroll, and screening tools and automating the work required between them.

Automating Workforce Operations With AI

Its agents can collect and examine documents, coordinate onboarding tasks, monitor credential expiry dates, and manage recurring compliance requirements. They also communicate with workers after shifts to identify problems that could affect retention, while recording actions for employer review. Firstwork is expanding beyond initial onboarding to include credential renewals, re-verification, further training, and ongoing employee support.

The company says more than 150,000 frontline workers begin jobs through its platform each month. It identifies Deel, Job&Talent, Relay, Wonolo, and BGSF among its customers, reporting reductions of up to 90% in the time employees and HR teams spend processing each new hire. Firstwork also says one major customer tripled the number of qualified candidates reaching their first shift after adopting the platform.

Growing Demand for Workforce Automation

These reported gains come as employers confront persistent workforce shortages, particularly in healthcare and transportation. Figures cited in Firstwork's announcement include a projected European shortage of 950,000 health workers by 2030 and more than 500,000 unfilled truck-driving positions in Europe. However, the company argues that improving recruitment outcomes also requires ensuring applicants already selected for jobs can complete the administrative steps needed to start.

Founders and Investor Support

Founded in 2024, Firstwork is led by co-founder and CEO Vardhan Kapoor and co-founder and CTO Shubham Choudhary. Kapoor previously held senior positions at Remitly and Deliveroo, gaining experience in markets dependent on frontline labor. Choudhary was a director of engineering at Deel and earlier contributed to the global employment infrastructure developed at Rippling.

Earlybird General Partner Tim Rehder highlighted Firstwork's ability to automate compliance work at high volumes, citing millions of monthly automated actions. The investor also sees an opportunity to address spending traditionally allocated to manual onboarding and compliance services, rather than competing exclusively with existing software providers. Firstwork's model reflects broader interest in applied AI products designed to carry out operational tasks within established business systems.

Expansion Plans Across the US and Europe

Firstwork plans to use the Series A proceeds to hire across AI research, engineering, applied AI development, and commercial operations. It will strengthen its presence in both the American and European markets while expanding the range of tasks handled by its agents throughout the employment lifecycle. The goal is to reduce repetitive administrative work and support employers as they manage documentation, workforce readiness, and ongoing regulatory obligations.

The funding gives Firstwork additional resources to pursue a market where hiring capacity depends as much on administrative execution as on applicant availability. Its next phase will test whether AI-driven workforce operations can deliver consistent improvements across customers, industries, and different compliance environments. For employers facing labor constraints, the company is positioning faster, more reliable worker onboarding and support as a practical route to keeping frontline operations staffed.
