Expo, the open-source platform for React Native development, has closed a $45 million Series B funding round led by Georgian. This capital will accelerate its mission to simplify mobile app creation and support its new AI-powered tool, Expo Agent. The company also welcomed Seth Webster as its new Chief Developer Evangelist to spearhead ecosystem growth.

Addressing a Fragmented Market

The mobile application market generates over $500 billion annually, yet developers often face fragmented and complex tooling. Founded in 2015 by industry veterans, Expo was created to streamline the entire app development lifecycle. The platform provides a comprehensive solution for building high-quality applications for iOS, Android, and the web.

Expo already powers applications for major enterprises like Pizza Hut, Phantom, and the MTA. The platform boasts impressive engagement with nearly 4 million weekly downloads and a community of over 3 million developers. This widespread adoption proves that simplifying development does not require compromising on quality or performance.

Strategic Use of New Capital

The investment will enhance Expo's core platform, promising faster builds and an improved developer experience. A primary focus will be on advancing agentic tooling for AI-assisted development, a new frontier for the company. This initiative begins with the public beta launch of Expo Agent, designed to transform how apps are built.

Expo Agent represents the company's first major step into agentic programming, acting as an embedded expert for development teams. This tool assists both humans and AI in creating production-ready native apps by understanding platform-specific patterns. It can scaffold projects, debug complex issues, and recommend optimal configurations, compressing development timelines.

Strengthening Leadership and Vision

To accelerate ecosystem growth, Expo has welcomed Seth Webster as its new Chief Developer Evangelist. Webster will lead the platform's narrative in an AI-native future, driving adoption among startups, enterprises, and global developer communities. His role involves deepening strategic partnerships and aligning the product roadmap with the ecosystem's evolving needs.

Co-founder Charlie Cheever noted that while agentic app development is growing, few applications are making it to production. He explained that Expo is positioned to solve this by baking its robust infrastructure directly into Expo Agent. The company's mission is to empower every builder to ship production-grade apps that can scale successfully.

Investor Confidence and Future Outlook

Emily Walsh, Lead Investor at Georgian, expressed strong confidence in the company's trajectory and its role in software's future. She noted that Expo has evolved from a popular framework into an essential infrastructure layer for cross-platform app development. Georgian believes Expo is democratizing how applications are built by capitalizing on the surge in AI-assisted coding.

The platform's real-world impact is validated by customers like New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Will Fisher, Head of Digital at MTA, highlighted how his team supports 3 million daily riders using Expo. He praised the ability to deploy critical fixes in under 90 seconds, emphasizing the platform's reliability at scale.

With its $45 million in new funding, the launch of Expo Agent, and a strengthened leadership team, Expo is poised for significant growth. The company is strategically positioned to lead the integration of AI into mobile app development, making the process more accessible. This move solidifies Expo's status as a critical partner for developers building successful applications.
