The European Investment Fund (EIF) has committed 220 million Swedish kronor, approximately €20 million, to Swedish venture capital firm BackingMinds. The investment will anchor BackingMinds Invest III, a fund targeting early-stage companies primarily in Sweden and across the Nordic region. The commitment aims to unlock entrepreneurial potential beyond established venture capital networks and bring new capital to overlooked founders.
Fund Focus and Target Founders
BackingMinds Invest III will prioritize founders who frequently remain outside mainstream venture capital circles. The fund will seek out businesses founded by women, people with immigrant backgrounds, and teams based outside capital cities. This approach reflects a deliberate effort to find entrepreneurial talent beyond existing networks and to diversify the region's innovation landscape.
Beyond founder demographics, the fund will target commercially promising companies that address environmental or social challenges. Priority areas include reducing carbon emissions, upgrading energy efficiency, improving healthcare, and bolstering education. This dual focus on commercial returns and measurable social impact aligns very closely with the EIF's inclusion and sustainability objectives.
EIF Backing and Catalytic Role
The EIF, part of the Luxembourg-based European Investment Bank Group, is the first institutional investor in BackingMinds Invest III. Its support is projected to help the fund attract additional institutional investors from across Europe and the wider Nordic investment community. The investment underscores the EIF's role in actively catalyzing private capital for underrepresented founders and impact-driven startups.
The EIF operation is backed by the European Union's InvestEU program under its Social Impact Equity component. This component supports investment funds financing businesses that combine commercial ambitions with positive social or environmental impact. The structure is designed to reduce risk for other institutional investors and encourage broader participation in the fund.
Proven Track Record
Through its two earlier funds, BackingMinds has invested in a total of 23 companies. Of these, 46% had at least one female founder, 43% had founders with immigrant backgrounds, and 71% were established outside a capital city. These results illustrate the firm's consistent capacity to identify promising businesses beyond mainstream networks and to back diverse founding teams.
Leadership Perspectives
EIF Deputy Chief Executive Merete Clausen said Europe cannot afford to leave talented entrepreneurs undiscovered simply because they are outside traditional venture capital networks. She noted that BackingMinds has demonstrated promising businesses can be found in places and among founders that investors too often miss. Clausen added that the support will help bring more capital to companies tackling some of Europe's most pressing challenges.
BackingMinds Founding Partner Sara Wimmercranz emphasized that the future is never where you expect it, and neither are the founders building it. She said some of the most innovative companies in the Nordics are being built where venture capital rarely reaches. Wimmercranz explained that networks can act as filters and that investors need to be more open and actively seek founders out.
The EIF's commitment to BackingMinds Invest III signals a growing institutional emphasis on inclusive entrepreneurship and impact-driven innovation. By backing a fund that deliberately looks beyond established networks, the EIF aims to channel capital toward solutions for climate, healthcare, and education challenges. This partnership could serve as a practical model for how public institutions can help widen access to venture capital across Europe.
