Diffraqtion Caps Pre-Seed With Over $10 million in Total Funding

Lockheed Martin Ventures and Presidio Ventures join to back its first fielded quantum camera

Diffraqtion, a spinout from MIT and the University of Maryland, has secured strategic investments from Lockheed Martin Ventures and Presidio Ventures, the venture arm of Sumitomo Corporation. The commitments bring the company's total funding to more than $10 million and close a pre-seed round that was capped due to strong investor demand. The capital supports the development of quantum camera platforms for defense and space sensing applications.


Strategic Capital and Investor Base

The new funding includes participation from SBI US Gateway Fund with Plug and Play, Collaborative Fund, and TekVentures. Existing investors Aether VC, milemark capital, and ADIN also provided follow-on commitments, adding to the round's momentum. This investor group joins Ground State Ventures, which led the first close announced in January 2026, and signals broad confidence in the company's technical direction.

Milestones Since the First Close

Diffraqtion has reported seven months of rapid progress since its initial close. The company completed on-sky demonstrations at a partner observatory, distinguishing closely spaced objects, and advanced its DARPA Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR into a second option period. NASA subsequently selected the company for an SBIR Phase I in orbital debris tracking and named it the winner of the $100,000 Space to Soil Challenge for adaptive sensing and onboard processing.

Quantum Camera Technology

Diffraqtion's quantum cameras resolve detail below the diffraction limit, the hard resolution floor that a lens aperture imposes on conventional optical systems. By sorting incoming light by its shape rather than its brightness, the platform captures information conventional cameras discard, reducing the aperture and compute needed to classify distant objects. Company simulations indicate this passive approach, grounded in quantum estimation theory rather than quantum computing, can resolve features up to 20 times smaller and classify targets orders of magnitude faster.

First Fielded Camera and Engineering Leadership

The new funding will move the technology into Diffraqtion's first fielded camera, with flight heritage planned through a hosted payload on a partner spacecraft. To lead this effort, the company appointed Peter Kazlas as Head of Engineering. Kazlas brings 25 years of experience taking advanced optics from laboratory development to volume production, including roles at E Ink and QD Vision, which was acquired by Samsung.

Executive and Investor Perspectives

Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Johannes Galatsanos stated that conventional cameras have historically required larger optics to see farther, while Diffraqtion's cameras deliver better mission capability at a fraction of the aperture, size, and cost. Lockheed Martin Ventures highlighted the potential of quantum-enabled imaging to improve target detection and classification with smaller, more efficient sensing systems. Presidio Ventures noted that the same physics advantage applies to sky, earth, and physical system guidance, creating opportunity in industrial and commercial markets globally.


With total funding above $10 million, Diffraqtion is positioned to build its first fielded camera and pursue operational engagements in space domain awareness and reconnaissance. The company's quantum camera platforms combine photonic hardware with a proprietary model layer that turns raw imagery into real-time intelligence. Beyond space sensing, the Somerville, Massachusetts-based company sees potential applications across drones, autonomy, and precision inspection.
