Sapient Perception, a Danish startup developing advanced AI sensor systems for drones, has successfully secured €2 million in a pre-seed funding round. The investment was co-led by venture capital firms Balnord and FORWARD.one. This capital will fuel the continued development of its software-defined cameras, expand its engineering team, and support deployments in critical sectors.
Revolutionizing UAV Visibility
Modern unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations face a significant visibility challenge, a problem Sapient Perception aims to solve. Current systems are hampered by bandwidth limitations, forcing a difficult tradeoff between imaging coverage and detailed resolution. This often requires operators to constantly switch views, which can compromise situational awareness and delay critical responses.
The company addresses this issue with its pioneering 10K sensors, which cover an area up to 100 times larger than conventional cameras at the same high resolution. A novel edge processing pipeline analyzes this vast amount of data directly on the drone. This approach delivers actionable insights in real-time, overcoming the constraints of latency and cognitive overload for operators.
“Our perception layer enables persistent situational awareness through a far wider lens, while delivering the important details to operators in real time,” stated Anthony Garetto, CEO of Sapient Perception. He emphasized that having this complete picture allows for more decisive action with a higher degree of confidence. This capability is crucial in mission-critical situations where fast, informed decisions determine outcomes.
Strategic Deployments and Partnerships
Sapient Perception is already putting its technology into practice through a partnership with Dropla Tech. The company's sensors are being integrated into UAVs designed to support the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence. These systems will be used to process real-time video to detect landmines and ambush drones along vital supply routes.
The technology's flexibility extends beyond frontline convoy protection to high-altitude applications. Sapient is collaborating with partners to deploy its sensors on stratospheric platforms for wide-area intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). This highlights the system's adaptability for various system integrators and industrial partners across Europe and North America.
Investor Confidence in Edge AI
The investment from Balnord and FORWARD.one underscores a growing demand for edge-based intelligence within the defense and security sectors. As operational complexity increases, the need for advanced sensors that can process data locally becomes more critical. This funding reflects confidence in Sapient Perception's ability to meet this evolving market need.
Jarek Pilarczyk, a Partner at Balnord, noted that modern defense operations are not fully leveraging the data from advanced sensors. He believes Sapient Perception's highly differentiated edge AI approach addresses this gap effectively. Pilarczyk sees the technology becoming a foundational component for the next generation of autonomous and security systems.
Cailin Greiner, Investment Manager at FORWARD.one, highlighted the importance of speed in the environments Sapient serves. She described the technology as a “clear step change” for turning high-quality sensor data into real-time insights at the edge. The system's ability to provide 100 times greater coverage represents a significant leap forward in operational capability.
With its new €2 million in funding, Sapient Perception is poised to accelerate the deployment of its transformative UAV sensor technology. The company's focus on providing comprehensive, real-time situational awareness addresses a critical need in defense, security, and emergency response. Through strategic partnerships and a clear technological advantage, Sapient is set to enhance decision-making in the world's most demanding environments.
