Danish AgTech startup Mycoverse has secured $2.8 Million in a pre-seed funding round to advance its biological crop protection technology. The investment was co-led by Future Food Fund and High-Tech Gründerfonds, with participation from PINC, Paulig’s venture arm. This new capital, which brings the company's total funding to $5 million, will accelerate the development of a novel solution for potato late blight.


Innovating Crop Protection with AI and Fungi

Mycoverse leverages an advanced AI-driven platform to discover potent fungal strains and develop bioactive metabolites for crop protection. This innovative method creates solutions that function similarly to chemical pesticides but are derived from natural sources. The technology is specifically designed to integrate seamlessly into existing farming practices, removing barriers to adoption for growers.

Originating as a spin-out from the Technical University of Denmark, the company has demonstrated remarkable efficiency with its platform. Christian Kannemeier of HTGF noted the impressive speed of their research, highlighting the development of promising potato blight candidates in just five months. This rapid progress underscores the platform's potential to quickly generate new agricultural biosolutions.

Strategic Investment for a Sustainable Future

The investment aligns with a growing focus on sustainable food production within safe ecological limits. Kim Wagenaar of Future Food Fund stated that their support is guided by the Planetary Boundaries framework, backing innovations that reduce environmental pressure. Mycoverse's technology is seen as a key enabler for achieving this goal in modern agriculture.

For PINC, the venture arm of Paulig, the investment supports a more resilient and sustainable food system. Rosemari Herrero, Senior Investment Manager at PINC, emphasized the need for technologies that reduce chemical inputs without sacrificing reliability. This strategic backing reflects a wider industry shift toward supporting upstream agricultural innovations for long-term food security.

Addressing a Critical Agricultural Challenge

The company's initial focus is potato late blight, one of Europe’s most destructive and costly crop diseases. This single issue represents an estimated global market opportunity of $1.8 billion, creating significant demand for effective treatments. Farmers currently face mounting pressure from evolving regulations and growing pathogen resistance to conventional chemical products.

As European authorities continue to phase out certain chemical crop protection products, the need for viable alternatives has become urgent. Mycoverse aims to provide a reliable and cost-effective biological solution that helps growers manage persistent disease threats. The company's scalable production approach is positioned to meet this increasing market demand effectively.

Path to Commercialization and Future Growth

With the new funding, Mycoverse will initiate a comprehensive two-year field trial program for its potato late blight solution. This phase is crucial for validating the product's performance under real-world conditions and moving toward commercial readiness. CEO and co-founder Svend Petersen affirmed that the funding brings the company closer to delivering products that farmers can adopt without altering their workflows.
