Singapore-based circular economy investment management firm Circulate Capital has invested in Indonesian plastic recycler Bumi Baru Plastic (BBP), marking its sixth investment in the archipelago. The investment, whose amount was not disclosed, will fund BBP's transition from pilot-scale production to a consolidated industrial site in Jonggol, West Java. BBP is targeting a fivefold increase in processing capacity over the next two years, Circulate Capital said in a statement.
Investment and Capacity Expansion
Circulate Capital's investment will fund BBP's consolidation of operations into one industrial facility in Jonggol, West Java. The move is designed to support a fivefold increase in processing capacity over the next two years. Dondi Hananto, investment partner for Southeast Asia at Circulate Capital, said BBP has developed advanced technical processing capabilities to convert some of Indonesia's most challenging waste streams into high-purity, OEM-grade materials.
Recycling Capabilities
Founded in 2022, BBP converts post-consumer and post-industrial plastic waste into recycled compounds for industrial applications that include automotive components, electronics, and packaging. The company processes end-of-life vehicle parts, industrial packaging, woven bags, and manufacturing offcuts into recycled pellets that meet original equipment manufacturers' specifications. This technical focus allows BBP to support manufacturers that need consistent quality and performance from recycled inputs.
Customer Base and Product Applications
BBP supplies more than 50 plastic manufacturers, with particular strength in the automotive and woven packaging sectors. Its recycled materials are used in products such as vehicle fenders, floor panels, and packaging, offering manufacturers an alternative to virgin plastic resin. The company's customer base demonstrates commercial demand for recycled compounds that meet original equipment manufacturers' specifications and deliver consistent performance.
Leadership Perspective
Kunal Nathani, BBP's CEO and co-founder, said the company's focus has always been on the hardest problems in polyolefin recycling, including preservation of material properties and ensuring circularity. Hananto noted that BBP's processing capabilities could help manufacturers use recycled materials in applications that require consistent quality and performance. These comments reflect the technical and commercial value that Circulate Capital sees in BBP's operations.
Operational Plans and Feedstock Network
Beyond consolidation, BBP plans to upgrade wastewater treatment facilities and establish downstream manufacturing lines for finished products such as specialized compounds and bubble wrap. These downstream products will serve industrial and commercial customers seeking reliable alternatives to virgin plastic resin in their operations. The company also aims to strengthen domestic feedstock supplies through a network of more than 400 collection partners.
Circulate Capital's Regional Strategy
The investment follows Circulate Capital's first close of its second climate fund at US$220 million about six months ago, representing more than 70% of the fund's US$300 million target. The firm has started deploying capital from the second fund into circular supply chains and recycling solutions across South and Southeast Asia, with a focus on plastic solutions and packaging, as well as electronics and apparel. Circulate Capital's first fund raised US$188 million.
Circulate Capital's investment in Bumi Baru Plastic highlights the growing role of private capital in addressing Indonesia's plastic waste challenges. By supporting a recycler that converts difficult waste streams into OEM-grade materials, the firm aims to strengthen circular supply chains in Southeast Asia. BBP's planned expansion and feedstock network could help more manufacturers replace virgin plastic resin with recycled alternatives.
