Pisa-based CamGraPhIC has secured a landmark €211 million in funding from the Italian state to pioneer a new class of graphene-based optical technology. This significant investment, approved by the European Commission, aims to address critical data movement bottlenecks within advanced AI and computing systems. The funding positions the company, the research arm of 2D Photonics, to redefine data transfer efficiency in future AI infrastructure.
Addressing the AI Data Bottleneck
Modern artificial intelligence systems are increasingly limited not by processing speed but by the efficiency of data transfer between components. As computational demands grow, existing interconnects consume excessive power, generate heat, and slow down overall system performance. This data bottleneck presents a major obstacle to scaling future AI and high-performance computing platforms.
CamGraPhIC, a spinout from the Cambridge Graphene Centre, is developing optical interconnects that leverage graphene's exceptional properties. This technology promises to move vastly more data with significantly lower energy consumption compared to current silicon photonics. The solution directly targets the bandwidth density and efficiency challenges that are critical for next-generation data centers.
A Strategic European Investment
The €211 million direct grant, sanctioned under the EU's State Aid Framework, is one of the largest public investments in an Italian deep-tech startup. The European Commission approved the measure, finding it necessary to support the development of a key European technology. This funding highlights a strategic push to bolster the continent's capabilities in advanced semiconductor innovation.
This single funding package surpasses the combined total of several recent, smaller photonics investments across France, the UK, and Germany. This comparison underscores the scale of public support being directed toward light-based computing solutions. The Commission concluded the aid would incentivize development that would not otherwise occur, without unduly affecting competition.
Pathway to Industrialization
The investment will be used to industrialize CamGraPhIC’s graphene photonics platform for deployment in AI accelerators and high-performance systems. A central pillar of this project is the construction of a dedicated pilot manufacturing facility near Milan. This initiative is designed to transition the technology from advanced research into real-world, large-scale production.
The new facility will handle device qualification, early manufacturing runs, and the eventual transfer to high-volume foundry processes. Scheduled to become operational in 2028, the pilot line will create over 150 highly skilled jobs across engineering and materials science. This provides a direct pathway from the laboratory to commercial deployment in future AI systems.
This substantial state-backed investment propels CamGraPhIC and Italy to the forefront of developing next-generation computing hardware. By establishing a domestic manufacturing capability for graphene photonics, the project represents a crucial step toward building a resilient European supply chain for critical AI components. It is a forward-looking initiative aimed at securing technological sovereignty and addressing future computational challenges.
