British Business Bank Commits £46 Million to Zinc Science-for-Impact Fund

The £70 million fund will back 80 deep tech startups in health and climate emerging from UK research

The British Business Bank has committed up to £46 million to Zinc's new Science-for-Impact Fund, reinforcing its focus on early-stage deep tech innovation across the United Kingdom. The wider fund has a target of £70 million and is designed to support 80 startups emerging from UK research in health and climate-related fields. The commitment forms part of the Bank's Enterprise Capital Funds programme and marks its second major investment in Zinc.


Targeting Research-Led Innovation

The Science-for-Impact Fund aims to back companies built around promising scientific work before formal business plans are created, an approach that differs from conventional venture capital. Zinc works closely with researchers, helping them transform laboratory breakthroughs into commercial ventures that address significant health and environmental challenges. This model is intended to narrow the persistent gap between UK research output and the creation of scalable, impactful businesses.

From Academic Research to Startup

Chris Watson spent 15 years studying gene regulation in failing hearts at Queen's University Belfast before founding SignaCor Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In March 2026, SignaCor won the top award in Zinc's Discovery Spark cardiovascular group and was added to the firm's portfolio. Watson has explained that existing therapies manage symptoms rather than reverse the disease, leaving patients with very limited treatment options.

Portfolio Examples Across Health and Climate

Among the companies supported by Zinc are Epiome, CellMine, and Speek, each addressing distinct health or environmental problems. Epiome is building an AI biomarker platform designed to detect diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's from blood samples years before symptoms appear. CellMine has developed a chemical method for recycling lithium-ion batteries, while Speek provides a clinician-supported digital platform for families looking after teenagers affected by self-harm.

Enterprise Capital Funds and Market Context

The commitment is the 55th fund supported under the Enterprise Capital Funds programme, a scheme that typically backs two to three new venture managers each year. The Bank previously supported Zinc's £28 million round in 2022 and has used the same mechanism to back Longwall Venture Partners and Antler. UK deep tech funding reached $11.3 billion in the first eight months of 2026, representing 41 percent of European venture funding.

Investor Perspectives

Mark Sims, the Bank's managing director for development equity funds, said breakthrough businesses need support from the very earliest stages if they are to realise their potential. He praised Zinc's track record in backing founders who tackle significant health and environmental challenges. Ella Goldner, Zinc's co-founder and managing partner, described the fund as fixing a leak in the system, while Misodzi Mukungurutse, senior investment manager, noted that Zinc's hands-on approach from day one sets it apart from other early-stage managers.

Evidence for Patient Deep Tech Investing

Longwall Venture Partners' science-driven approach has already produced a 19.2x return from the $1.5 billion sale of OrganOx, evidence that patient deep tech investing can succeed in the UK. Zinc has not yet recorded an exit of comparable scale. If 80 more businesses built around researchers like Watson perform well, it could indicate whether institutional venture building becomes a main route from UK lab to UK company.


The new Science-for-Impact Fund positions Zinc to deepen its role in translating UK scientific research into high-impact companies. With up to £46 million from the British Business Bank and a broader £70 million target, the initiative addresses a persistent gap in early-stage support for deep tech ventures. Its progress will be watched closely as a test of whether researcher-led venture building can become a reliable engine for UK innovation and commercialisation.
