Bill Gross, the founder of Idealab and Idealab Studio, announced the public launch of Idealab.ai on October 19, 2026 in Pasadena, California. The new platform applies artificial intelligence to his 50 years of entrepreneurship and a methodology that has supported the creation of more than 175 companies. At launch, Idealab.ai makes more than 1.2 million business ideas freely searchable to people around the world, positioning the tool as a resource for aspiring founders.
A Scalable System for Business Idea Generation
Idealab.ai started with an observation Gross made while reading about a global copper shortage. He realized that nearly every business article contains an ingredient of business creation, such as a problem to solve, an enabling technology, or a shift in the landscape. The platform now analyzes more than 17 million sources and infers opportunities, enablers, and shifts to generate potential businesses, then develops those combinations into ideas for exploration.
From Real-World Problems to Potential Companies
The system formalizes 31 methods Gross developed over three decades to identify promising companies. Each generated idea can be researched, evaluated, and ranked against indicators that include urgency of need, technology readiness, market viability, and competitive whitespace. Human judgment remains central to deciding which ideas are worth pursuing, and because the system can generate far more ideas than any one organization could pursue, Idealab.ai gives them away freely.
Tools for Exploration and Founder Assessment
Visitors can search, filter, view idea briefs, save ideas, and use the Labs functionality to take an idea to the next step. Idealab.ai is also developing the Periodic Table of Business Functions, a framework covering customer discovery, product development, finance, sales, operations, legal, and other work required to build a company. For founders who want a deeper forward-looking assessment, Advanced Search Beta offers a paid report from Preseen, an AI forecasting tool.
University and Global Partner Network
Arizona State University has committed to providing all its students worldwide with access to Idealab.ai and will launch a showcase highlighting the top 10 businesses built from platform ideas. Imperial College London anticipates a private instance of the idea engine to explore business opportunities within its research, while Caltech is expanding its entrepreneurial programs with the system. Global partners include RAISE US, Global Entrepreneurship Network, Endeavor, Janngo, and Flat6Labs.
Partner Perspectives on the Launch
Gina Raimondo, Co-Chair and CEO of RAISE US, said that the organization is committed to helping the American workforce adapt to an AI economy through small business growth and job creation. Dr. Michael Crow, President of Arizona State University, described the partnership as a global engine for entrepreneurship, job creation, and real-world impact. Jeff Hoffman, Chairman of Global Entrepreneurship Network, said making business ideas freely available gives more people a starting point for their entrepreneurial journey.
Funding, Infrastructure, and Long-Term Ambition
Cloudflare is the first partner for the Periodic Table of Business Functions and will support businesses started through the platform with US$100,000 in credits, while Mercury will provide financial infrastructure for founders. Idealab.ai also announced a goal to help connect founders around the world with US$100 million in potential funding. Its long-term ambition is to help catalyze the creation of 1,000,000 new businesses and 100,000,000 new jobs.
A Global Movement for Entrepreneurship
Idealab.ai frames the launch as an alternative to widespread fears that AI will eliminate jobs. According to Gross, the platform shows how AI can help people discover important ideas, develop plans, and access tools to build companies. The organization is inviting universities, accelerators, technology companies, workforce organizations, and media partners to join a global movement for entrepreneurship.
