Quebec City-based healthtech startup Bia Health has raised CAD 2.15 million in Pre-Seed financing to scale its Bia Assistant, a clinical intelligence tool that helps providers reduce unnecessary imaging and referrals. The company estimates that unnecessary and low-value care represents about 30% of healthcare in Canada. The round combines CAD 1.4 million in debt from Finalta Capital with equity led by Anges Québec and participation from Desjardins through its Startup en résidence program, alongside physician angel investors.

Funding Structure and Strategic Backing

Montreal-based Finalta Capital provided the debt portion, while Anges Québec led the equity investment and Desjardins participated through its Startup en résidence program. The company is an established venture with CAD 500,000 in annual recurring revenue and a continuing education platform used by thousands of health professionals in Quebec. The new capital will support deployment across clinics, teleconsultation platforms, and healthcare organizations as Bia looks to amplify its impact.

From Education Platform to Clinical Intelligence

Bia was co-founded in 2016 by healthcare professionals, including CEO Anne-Sophie Paquet, a physiotherapist. The company initially built e-learning modules and a library of medical content to make clinical knowledge more accessible to health professionals. Over time, the founders recognized that the larger problem was not access to evidence but helping clinicians apply it at the point of care, which led to the development of the Bia Assistant.

How the Bia Assistant Works

Bia Assistant, which is not meant to replace clinical judgment, integrates directly into clinical workflows without complex system changes or replacing existing software. It contextualizes clinical conduct in real time based on patient characteristics and scientific recommendations, indicating what to do and what to avoid while generating personalized self-care plans. Its recommendations align with Choosing Wisely Canada and Canadian practice guidelines, are validated by an independent scientific committee, and do not transmit or retain patient data.

Focus on Musculoskeletal Care and Savings

Musculoskeletal disorders represent approximately 40% of first-line consultations, and up to 30% of resulting imaging and referrals may provide no clinical benefit. Bia is focused initially on this care category through a six-month pilot with Santé Québec in the Capitale-Nationale Universitaire region involving 100 clinicians. The company estimates that wide adoption across primary care could save Quebec up to CAD 100 million annually.

US Market Ambition

Beyond Quebec, Bia Health plans to target the larger United States market, where unnecessary medical imaging costs about US$12 billion each year according to the Journal of the American College of Radiology. This spending adds financial strain and increases pressure on a workforce that is already stretched. Bia is also building its intellectual property position and has a first commercial client in the signing process, which investors view as a durable advantage.

With this Pre-Seed financing, Bia Health is moving from validation to deployment and aiming to make evidence-based guidance more accessible at the moment clinical decisions are made. The company sees unnecessary imaging and low-value referrals as a major source of system inefficiency, and it argues that AI applied to care efficiency will become a condition of health system viability. Its expansion into musculoskeletal care and US entry could free resources for patients who need them most while reducing avoidable costs.
