Backbone, a Belgium-based food industry software startup, has secured €4 million in pre-seed funding to advance its AI-powered quality and compliance platform. The round was led by Pitchdrive, with participation from PROfounders, Passion Capital, 100IN and several well-known investors from the food sector. The company aims to help food producers replace fragmented spreadsheets, emails and disconnected systems with a unified, intelligent approach to quality management.

Addressing a Critical Industry Problem

One compliance miss can destroy a brand overnight, yet an estimated 80 percent of food producers still run quality on spreadsheets and institutional memory. The food and feed sector is one of the world's largest and most regulated, but quality and compliance workflows remain fragmented across emails, spreadsheets and disconnected systems. Backbone addresses this by unifying those workflows in a single AI-native platform designed specifically for food quality and compliance.

Many food producers still manage quality and compliance through spreadsheets, emails and isolated departmental data that rarely communicate with one another. Supplier information, recipes, laboratory results and regulatory requirements often sit in separate systems, forcing multiple teams to manually review and update related information whenever changes occur. Backbone brings this data together and checks it against standards including IFS, BRCGS and FSSC 22000 so teams can spot gaps, search quality data and prioritise actions.

AI-Powered Platform Drives Early Expansion

Backbone has already expanded beyond its Belgian home market into the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, serving a growing customer base. Its customers span the food supply chain, from raw material and ingredient suppliers to producers, packaging companies and distributors. The platform continuously analyzes supplier documentation, lab results, internal procedures and regulatory standards, helping manufacturers detect risks before they impact production.

Louis Opsomer, co-founder of Backbone, said that a food company today has all the data it needs to make better quality decisions, but the different data points are not talking to each other. The startup builds an intelligence layer that connects those dots, understands the context and puts it to work, he explained. The platform structures information and checks it against food safety and quality standards, allowing teams to search quality data and prioritise actions.

Funding to Fuel Product and Partnership Growth

The new capital will be used to further develop Backbone's product, expand its marketing activities and pursue partnerships with international certification bodies and ERP implementation partners. Backbone estimates the initial market includes more than 120,000 GFSI-certified food and feed production sites across Europe and North America, representing an estimated €3 billion software opportunity. Producers also spend between €18 billion and €22 billion each year on consultants, auditors and certification bodies to interpret regulations and prepare audits.

Pitchdrive co-founder and general partner Boris Bogaert said Backbone is not just fixing quality management in food and beverage but setting a new standard for the industry through AI. He highlighted the team's speed, execution and deep domain obsession as key factors behind the investment. The founding team includes Louis Opsomer, Siska Lannoo and Julien Steel, who previously held leadership roles at Showpad, Henchman and Rydoo.

Backbone's pre-seed funding arrives as food producers face mounting pressure to strengthen compliance and reduce supply chain risks. By centralizing quality data and applying AI-driven analysis, the startup is positioning itself to capture a meaningful share of the estimated €3 billion software opportunity and the larger annual spend on audits and certification. With early international traction and backing from experienced technology investors, Backbone is building a foundation to modernize quality management across the global food and feed industry.
