Aries Media Ventures has officially launched Aries Media Ventures Fund I, an early-stage venture fund targeting media-tech startups across Sub-Saharan Africa. The Los Angeles-based firm announced on October 20, 2026, that the fund has begun deploying capital and has already completed initial investments in 3 startups. This launch marks a meaningful effort to direct venture capital into emerging media markets that have historically been underserved.

Fund Launch and Initial Commitments

The fund made its first commitments to Aktivate, a creator marketing platform; HustleSasa, an events commerce platform; and Book Mahali, a venue booking and hospitality platform. These 3 companies operate across distinct segments of the media and commerce value chain while serving customers in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their selection illustrates the fund's goal of backing founders who address concrete market needs rather than chasing broad trends.

Origins of the Firm

Aries Media Ventures began as Aries Media Project, a professional network launched in 2023 to connect media and entertainment startups in emerging markets with investors, operators, and industry experts in Los Angeles, New York, and London. Over three years, the network facilitated introductions between early-stage founders and executives at global media companies. That experience revealed a clear gap in direct capital support, prompting the evolution into an investment vehicle.

Investment Strategy and Stage Focus

Aries Media Ventures Fund I invests at the angel, Pre-Seed, and Seed stages, with a focus on technology-enabled businesses operating at the intersection of media, entertainment, and commerce. By targeting early-stage companies, the firm seeks to enter at a point where capital and strategic guidance can meaningfully shape growth. The approach is designed to address the funding constraints that often limit media innovation in emerging markets.

Leadership and Vision

Founding General Partner Alykhan Kaba brings more than a decade of experience across media, entertainment, technology, and corporate development from roles at Live Nation, Entertainment One, Activision Blizzard, and NBCUniversal. He observed that major media companies frequently look globally for growth while overlooking compelling innovation in emerging markets. Kaba described Aries as a vehicle for identifying exceptional founders in underserved markets and providing the capital, expertise, and relationships they require.

Sourcing Model and Support

The fund sources companies through two complementary approaches and supplements its investments with strategic support drawn from relationships across the global media ecosystem. First, Aries identifies founders who are already building businesses that address significant opportunities in their home markets. Second, the firm partners with established media companies to identify operational and commercial challenges tied to international expansion and then connects those challenges with founders capable of developing targeted solutions.

Closing the Capital Gap

Kaba emphasized that media is becoming increasingly global while the capital and networks available to media entrepreneurs remain highly concentrated. He argued that capital bears the burden of going where the innovation is happening, not the reverse. The fund's purpose is to close this gap by investing directly in promising Sub-Saharan African media-tech startups and giving them access to global industry resources.

The launch of Aries Media Ventures Fund I signals a growing recognition that emerging markets hold significant potential for media and entertainment innovation. By pairing early-stage capital with strategic relationships and operational insight, the firm aims to support founders who are building the future of media in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its first 3 investments offer an early indication of the types of platform businesses the fund intends to back.
