ARCHIMED, a global private equity healthcare investor, has acquired a majority stake in Genetica, a Brazilian pioneer in bio-based industrial wastewater treatment. Headquartered in Chapecó, in the state of Santa Catarina, Genetica develops, manufactures, and sells biological solutions for wastewater treatment, biogas generation, and bio-based crop protection. The investment, the financial terms of which were not disclosed, marks ARCHIMED's first standalone transaction in Brazil and underscores increasing demand for biological alternatives to chemical water treatment.

Platform and Market Position

Founded in 2005, Genetica has built a vertically integrated platform that combines microorganism research and development, proprietary formulation, and in-house manufacturing. The company's microbial library and treatment protocols support high-performance products and a hands-on technical service model. It serves customers across agribusiness, food and beverage, collagen, and pharmaceuticals, among other industrial sectors.

Environmental and Cost Benefits

Genetica's biological solutions are designed to be more efficient and cost-effective than conventional chemical inputs in wastewater treatment. The company provides tailored protocols based on laboratory analysis of each customer's effluent. These solutions lower treatment costs, reduce waste, and limit the amount of chemicals entering the water cycle, delivering cleaner industrial effluents and fewer downstream pollution events.

Strategic Fit within ARCHIMED

Water quality is a core focus of ARCHIMED's Environmental Health strategy, and wastewater treatment remains a priority area. Demand for improved water quality is increasing as industrial capacity expands and environmental standards become more stringent. With high technical and regulatory barriers to entry and rapid adoption of biological solutions in Brazil, Genetica is well positioned at the forefront of the market.

Growth Strategy and Commercial Expansion

ARCHIMED identified Genetica following an extensive review of the biological water-treatment market and sourced the investment opportunity directly. The firm will deploy its MedValue template, which includes product range extension, innovation, broader licensing, and acquisitions. ARCHIMED's support will focus on strengthening the commercial organization and key-account coverage while expanding Genetica's solutions into new industrial segments.

Leadership Perspectives

Ivan Sganderla, Genetica co-founder, said the company has built a reference point for biological wastewater treatment in Brazil over the past 20 years. He added that ARCHIMED brings the operational support, international network, and resources to scale the platform. Anderson Bernardi, co-founder, said the business will maintain technical excellence and agility while increasing investment in research and development and expanding in Brazil and internationally.

Fund Details and Performance

ARCHIMED acquired its majority stake in Genetica through the MED III fund, alongside Rise Investment, a Brazilian impact investment fund, as minority co-investor. Genetica is ARCHIMED's first standalone investment in Brazil and the tenth investment of MED III, which closed on EUR 650 million in 2021. All ARCHIMED's deployed buyout funds from 2019, 2021, and 2022 vintages are top-quartile performers for their respective vintage years, according to Preqin 2026.

Investor Commentary

Thibaut Mongon, Partner at ARCHIMED, said few companies in environmental biotechnology combine Genetica's proprietary microbial know-how, fully in-house manufacturing, and a service model refined during two decades inside customer treatment plants. Antoine Faguer, Partner at ARCHIMED, noted that industrial customers are accelerating their shift from chemical to biological solutions. Genetica, he added, is positioned to lead that transition.

The transaction extends ARCHIMED's Environmental Health strategy into Brazil's growing biological wastewater treatment market and adds a platform with strong technical capabilities. Genetica's proprietary technology and service model offer a clear alternative to chemical inputs while supporting cleaner industrial water systems. With ARCHIMED's operational resources and international network, the company is expected to scale its product range, deepen customer relationships, and pursue expansion outside Brazil.
