Anthropic has published an open-source blueprint that enables engineering teams to build their own Claude-powered commerce agents inside merchant apps and websites. The resource provides working implementations for customer shopping support and for back-end merchant operations, with deployment possible across several cloud platforms. It arrives as agentic commerce gains momentum among retailers, travel companies, telecommunications providers, and ticketing platforms preparing for the holiday season.

What the Blueprint Delivers for Shoppers

The shopping agent is designed to live within a merchant's app or website, with integration points for catalog, cart, checkout, preferences, and order history. It can handle requests such as finding a tent, sleeping bag, and stove for a weekend trip and then tailoring suggestions to a customer's preferences. The agent also shows products and carts directly in conversation, builds the cart for checkout, and answers service questions about orders, returns, and refunds.

Supporting Merchant Operations

The companion merchant agent supports store staff by answering questions about sales performance, stock levels, and inventory risks. It can proactively flag issues such as an item about to sell out before a promotion begins and recommend pricing or promotional actions based on store history. Any proactive change is approved by a person before it goes live, and the agent can also draft marketing campaigns and display charts or dashboards.

Deployment, Tools, and Required Expertise

The blueprint includes reference implementations, harnesses, patterns, guardrails, and a Claude Code plugin that can accelerate setup from weeks to days or hours in some early tests. It is designed for teams already building through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry, or Google Cloud Vertex AI. Anthropic suggests that while the material lowers the barrier, smaller businesses without dedicated engineering capacity may still need technical sophistication or partner support.

Early Results and Ecosystem Support

Anthropic reports that retailers running shopping agents on Claude have seen carts become up to 35 percent larger and shoppers become 60 percent more likely to complete a purchase. Enterprise customers including Shopify, Priceline, Intuit, Wix, Klaviyo, and Square are working with Claude to bring conversational commerce to their users. Visa, Mastercard, and Accenture are also collaborating to help merchant communities adopt the blueprint through trusted payments and commerce infrastructure.

Platform Readiness and Early Developer Feedback

Shopify has published its own reference storefront implementation that connects Claude agents to merchant stores through Catalog, UCP, and Shop Sign-in. Wix engineers reported having a working commerce agent within fifteen minutes, while teams at Zomato and Square described the setup as practical and aligned with production practices. Such feedback suggests that experienced engineering groups can move quickly, but integration quality will depend on existing storefront and payment infrastructure.

Industry Signals and Agentic Commerce

Accenture's latest research, referenced in the launch materials, found that 85 percent of respondents are open to collaborating with an AI agent and nearly three in four would trust a personal AI agent more than their best friend to make a purchase. Company leaders described agentic commerce as a change that affects what gets purchased, when, where, and by whom. Anthropic and its partners argue that providing a proven starting point can help organizations move from concept to production faster.

Anthropic's commerce blueprint signals a broader shift toward merchant-controlled AI shopping experiences rather than plug-in chatbots operated by third parties. By giving engineering teams reusable code and partner integrations, the company is positioning Claude as the intelligence behind commerce agents on a merchant's own surface. The launch could accelerate adoption ahead of the holiday season, although the path to production remains most immediate for businesses with existing cloud and engineering resources.
