AI developer Anthropic has announced a significant expansion into the South Korean market with the upcoming launch of a new office in Seoul. To spearhead this initiative, the company has appointed seasoned technology executive KiYoung Choi as its Representative Director for Korea. This strategic move is driven by the exceptionally high adoption of its AI model, Claude, which sees usage rates in the country more than triple the expected average.


Strategic Leadership for a Key Market

KiYoung Choi brings over three decades of leadership experience in the technology sector across Korea and the wider Asia-Pacific region. Before joining Anthropic, he served as the General Manager for Korea at the global cloud company Snowflake. His extensive resume also includes senior country leadership positions at tech giants such as Google Cloud, Adobe, Autodesk, and Microsoft, making him a strategic hire.

In his new capacity, Choi will be responsible for developing a customized go-to-market strategy that caters to the specific needs of the Korean market. He stated that Korea's combination of technical depth and commitment to responsible AI deployment aligns perfectly with Anthropic's core mission. This synergy was a key factor in his decision to join the company and focus on its long-term growth in the region.

Capitalizing on High AI Adoption

Anthropic's decision to establish a physical presence is strongly supported by internal data showing remarkable engagement with its products in South Korea. According to the company's Economic Index, Koreans utilize the Claude AI model at a rate 3.5 times higher than anticipated based on population size. This usage is particularly concentrated in technical and creative professional fields, indicating a strong and specific demand for advanced AI tools.

Several prominent Korean organizations are already integrating Claude into their operations, demonstrating its practical value across different industries. SK Telecom, the nation's largest telecommunications provider, is using the model to develop a custom AI for its customer service teams to improve service quality. Similarly, Law&Company has implemented Claude to power an AI legal assistant, helping lawyers streamline research and document preparation with high accuracy.

Anthropic's Broader Asia-Pacific Strategy

The Korean expansion is a key component of Anthropic's broader international growth strategy, particularly within the Asia-Pacific region. Chris Ciauri, Anthropic's Managing Director of International, praised Choi's deep understanding of the local technology landscape as crucial for their success. Ciauri emphasized that Choi will be instrumental in building the local team and partnerships needed to support Korean organizations effectively.

This move mirrors Anthropic's recent actions in other key Asian markets, such as appointing another former Snowflake executive to lead its Japan office. The company, which established its Korean entity last year, is now formalizing its operations with dedicated local leadership. This pattern highlights a deliberate strategy of recruiting experienced B2B specialists to accelerate enterprise adoption and solidify its regional footprint.
