ALIS, a clinical and operational software provider for senior living communities, has acquired the Ella® and elbi® technology platforms from TapRoot Interventions & Solutions, marking the company’s first acquisition. The deal expands ALIS into specialized dementia and behavioral care support by adding AI-enabled tools that provide caregivers with real-time, personalized guidance during interactions with residents. ALIS founder and CEO John Shafaee announced the acquisition at ALIS FWD, the company’s second annual user conference.

Expanding Dementia and Behavioral Care Capabilities

The acquisition brings technology designed to help senior living staff manage complex behavioral situations using person-centered, non-pharmacological approaches. Ella and elbi collect and analyze behavioral information at the point of care, then provide caregivers with recommendations intended to prevent or resolve challenging reactions while reducing caregiver stress. The platforms also give senior living operators tools to apply population health management practices and measure behavioral care outcomes across their communities.

ALIS said the addition of the technologies supports its broader strategy of developing purpose-built software for senior living providers facing growing operational and clinical pressures. Dementia care can require caregivers to make rapid decisions based on individual residents’ behaviors, histories, and changing conditions, creating demand for tools that can make specialized guidance more accessible. By integrating the TapRoot platforms, ALIS aims to make that expertise available directly to frontline care teams through technology they can use during daily interactions.

Ella Brings Personalized Guidance to Caregivers

Ella is designed as a digital dementia care guide that delivers personalized behavioral interventions to caregivers through a smartphone-based interface. According to the companies, pilot programs involving senior living communities have associated the platform with improvements in behavioral intervention effectiveness and lower reliance on as-needed psychotropic medications. The technology can also generate real-time alerts for supervisors when higher-risk situations emerge, including physical aggression or residents attempting to leave a community.

TapRoot developed Ella around a behavioral database intended to help care teams respond more consistently to residents with dementia while relying less heavily on medication-based interventions. The platform uses information gathered during care interactions to recommend approaches tailored to individual circumstances and provide caregivers with support at the moment decisions are being made. elbi extends a similar person-centered approach to home caregivers, offering digital guidance aimed at improving care interactions outside institutional senior living environments.

TapRoot Technology Joins the ALIS Platform

TapRoot Interventions & Solutions was founded in 2019 by Linda Buscemi, PhD, LPC, who serves as the company’s co-founder and chief clinical officer. The company developed Ella and elbi to address situations in which caregivers are required to make complicated care decisions without immediate access to sufficient behavioral information or specialized support. Buscemi said joining ALIS will allow the technologies to reach a larger population of caregivers and residents while maintaining the clinical approach behind their development.

ALIS already provides an integrated platform combining customer relationship management, clinical operations, billing, electronic medication administration records, business intelligence, and artificial intelligence for senior living organizations. Adding Ella and elbi strengthens the company’s clinical technology portfolio and introduces more specialized behavioral and dementia care capabilities into its broader software ecosystem. The acquisition also reflects ALIS’s effort to use AI and data-driven tools to support both operational efficiency and care quality as senior living providers manage increasing workforce and resource pressures.

Integration Plans

Ella will continue operating under its existing brand in the near term while ALIS and TapRoot begin incorporating the technology into the broader ALIS product roadmap. The companies have not disclosed financial terms for the transaction or provided a detailed timetable for completing the integration. Existing and prospective ALIS customers will be able to explore the dementia and behavioral care technology through their ALIS account teams as the companies move forward with deployment.

The acquisition of Ella and elbi gives ALIS a more specialized position in dementia and behavioral care while expanding the capabilities of its senior living software platform. By combining TapRoot’s behavioral care technology with ALIS’s existing clinical and operational infrastructure, the company is seeking to give frontline caregivers faster access to personalized, evidence-informed interventions. The transaction marks ALIS’s first acquisition and signals a broader push to integrate AI-powered decision support more deeply into everyday senior living care.
